OSTEOPATHY & SPECIFIC LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Neurodevelopment and learning difficulties

Many children suffer from a variety of specific learning difficulties. These can affect various areas of learning.

Common problems can be in the form of Dyslexia which is an umbrella term for a variety of issues e.g., auditory or visual processing or short-term memory problems.

Dyspraxia can affect speech or co-ordination. When co-ordination is impaired, writing can prove very difficult.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) tends to affect concentration and can make the child impulsive in behaviour.

Children with Asperger’s Syndrome tend to have some difficulties with social skills.

Children with Sensory Integration Disorder can often feel overwhelmed and over-stimulated in learning situations.

Each of these conditions seems to affect slightly different areas of the brain and its connections to other areas.

Osteopathy works to try to allow the whole body to interact in a more free manner, looking at supporting the forces for health and motion in the body and nervous systems. We see children with all of these conditions and more and many report seeing clear progress in their learning.
