OSTEOPATHY, DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics and dental arch development

Osteopathy has a variety of uses alongside Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Ian Wright spent 7 years working alongside dentists in a specialised practice in the UK dealing with cranio-facial pain syndromes.

The way the jaw develops is hugely influenced by the function of the cranial bones and our postural development. Retained moulding of the face and skull bones and position of the head on the neck from birth or pre-birth postioning can affect the growth and developmental balance of the jaw and hence teeth positioning.

Often the mandible is depressed in the birth process itself.

Dysfunction of the face and top of neck can lead to malocclusion, and cranio-facial pain syndromes like temporo-mandibular dysfunction (TMD).

Cranial Osteopathy has a defined role in treating the causes of these problems. This, when combined with skillful orthopaedic orthodontic treatment from dentists, can optimise teeth position working WITH the function of the cranial bones and body as a whole. This can make the process quicker and avoid possible side-effects.

Dentistry and orthodontics are complex areas and it is best to speak with Ian Wright for a more detailed picture.

Other areas where Osteopathy can help with dentistry is when dental appliances and cross and bridge work are causing headache or jaw pain – Osteopathy can help the body adapt to these appliances.
